About 35,000 firefighters from all over the world took part in the Dec. 9, 1999, memorial service for six Worcester, MA, firefighters who died in the line of duty on Dec. 3.
The continuous two-mile-long procession marched under an American flag hanging from two raised Worcester ladder trucks parked near the Wor-cester Central Division.
The memorial service took place in the Centrum Center across from Central Division. The gathering may have been the largest in the 350-year history of the U.S. fire service.
