Firehouse.Com, NECN Announce Release of 'Worcester Six' Memorial Video

COLLEGE PARK, Md. (July 5, 2000) -- Firehouse.Com, in partnership with New England Cable News (NECN), is producing a commemorative video of the "Worcester Six" memorial service, with profits benefiting the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) and the Worcester
Firefighters Memorial Fund.
"The memorial service thoroughly reflected the connection that members of the fire service have for their fellow firefighters," says Firehouse.Com Founder Dave Iannone. "It is a moment in history that was fortunately captured on film. Its intensity and heartbreak for those lost should never be forgotten."
On Dec. 3, 1999, six Worcester, Mass. firefighters died battling a cold storage warehouse blaze. They were memorialized days later at one of the largest memorial services in the history of the fire service that was attended by an estimated 30,000 firefighters and civilians from around the world, including President Bill Clinton and Vice President Al Gore.
In addition to the touching full-length two-hour memorial service, Firehouse.Com's video also includes a special music/video montage produced by NECN.
"It was important for us at NECN as New Englanders to tell the story of what had happened in Worcester, and to provide a way for the world to mourn with the rest of us as these firefighters were memorialized," said NECN president and founder Philip Balboni. "We are pleased to be able to share our coverage of these events through the video."
Profits from the videos will be donated to the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, an organization created by Congress to honor our fallen fire heroes and assist their families and coworkers, and the
Worcester Firefighters Memorial project, which will go toward building a memorial in honor of Worcester's fallen brothers.
"We are most grateful to Firehouse.Com for making this special donation which will help us remember our nation's fallen fire heroes," said Mary Ellis, managing director of the Foundation.
The Foundation will use the funding for programs to support the families of fallen firefighters, including helping offset expenses to attend the annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service at the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Other programs managed by the NFFF include a scholarship for the children and spouses of fallen firefighters in the United States.
An initial run of videos will be available for $20 (including tax) exclusively at the Firehouse.Com booth at the Firehouse Emergency Services Expo in Baltimore, July 19-21. Copies of the "Worcester Six" video will be made available through Firehouse.Com later this summer.
As part of the Firehouse commitment to the Worcester story, the July issue of Firehouse Magazine features a series of articles about Worcester, including an exclusive interview with the initial incident commander. Firehouse.Com and Firehouse Magazine are also co-sponsors of the Worcester Firefighters Memorial Safety & Training Seminar this September.
Firehouse.Com has received high praise for its continuing interactive coverage of the Worcester tragedy. Earlier this year, the site was honored with the Jesse H. Neal Award for editorial excellence in business-to-business journalism.
Firehouse.Com, the web's community and resource for firefighting, rescue, EMS and safety, is a property of Cygnus Business Media, a Commerce Connect Media company.
